As long as reading felt like a game, I had no problem with his motivation. But let’s be honest—school lessons alone aren’t enough. Kids need daily practice, because practice makes perfect! The challenge? Convincing a six-year-old to spend at least ten minutes a day reading.

I tried so many different methods—bringing home fun books and comic strips, creating a reward chart with stamps, asking, encouraging, even begging. Nothing worked! For a short time, the stamp chart helped, but the excitement quickly wore off. Still, that gave me a clue: he needed something that was both rewarding and a little mysterious. That’s how I came up with the idea of secret picture puzzles.

I spent a few hours creating a special board with 25 squares and cutting a picture into 25 matching pieces. A single piece on its own doesn’t show anything—but when you stick them in the right places, a hidden character appears!

How it works:

For every 10 minutes of reading, Krzyś earned one puzzle square. He glued it onto the board in the marked spot. Day by day, the picture slowly came to life. After 25 days—success! The first secret character was revealed. And the best part? He couldn’t wait to see what would be hidden in the next one.

If you want to try this with your child, you can print the puzzle pieces on sticker paper (kids love peeling and sticking!), but regular paper and glue will work just as well.

Not just for reading practice

Your kids aren’t reading yet? No problem! Secret picture puzzles can be a fun reward system for other daily routines—like brushing teeth, tidying up, or putting toys back in place. You don’t even have to spread it over days—assembling the puzzle all at once is just as exciting as building regular jigsaw puzzles.

So… are you ready to see which character is hiding in the next picture? 🎉 Download the printable and give it a try!

obrazkiszyfrowePobierz

Before my son started school, he loved discovering new letters and putting together his very first words.
